Matty Marcos was born in Habana in 1947. She studied plastic arts at the San Alejandro Superior
School of Fine Arts in Habana, where at the same time she completed engraving and lithography works
at Plaza de la Catedral de la Habana Shop.

Matty Marcos participated in various group expositions in Cuba. In 1971, she traveled to Spain, where
she became a part of the artistic scene and also studied the artistic roots of the old Europe. She
worked in a ceramic craft shop, designing and modeling originals. Because of her dedication to the arts
she obtained membership on the Spaniard Painters and Sculptors Association.
Matty Marcos left a note to her mother before leaving Cuba , where you can feel the outstanding
humanitarian and vocational stature of the artist.
Seek in my love, faith, trust; look at my eyes today and take from them what you need, and the day
that I will not be here, rest your eyes on my work and you will find me. My life is in my work; it is
the only thing I have. They were made with my hands, only capable to give love; with the pain that
humanity make them suffer, but they are here to give to humankind the gift of myself.

On December of 1975, after participating in various exhibitions in Miami , she moved to live in this
sunshine land that reminds her of its beloved island. She participated in about fifteen group and seven
individual exhibitions until 1981, when she decides to take time off for personal matters.

While she was recluse, Dr. Josefina Rubio of Todo Magazine wrote this about Matty.
Regardless of her youth, Matty has a perfectly defined style in her paintings. A modern, bright and
colorful strong trace in most of her backgrounds and a well marked Afro-Cuban influence in her
paintings. Deeply analyzing her work, there is no doubt that even though she has a modern line, the
influence of the disclaimed Cuban school is apparent, which its main characteristic is the oval face,
slender, refined toward the chin.
This style was introduced by Victor Manuel and continued by other painters until today. This
characteristic is typical in the paintings of Oliva Robaina, Eddy Cortada and others, and is almost a
trademark that has been influencing new painters. Can this be classified as Cuban School or not?
Some experts in the field denied its existence while others confirm it. Without doubt, Matty Marcos
has a great future in her hands. Her style is well liked, is firm, easy, and of great creativity.

After being absent for some time from public view, Matty Marcos continues to live in a world that is
not hers. Adjusting to new experiences, helping from a distance her family in Cuba . Sad for so many
years in exile, which forced her to learn different customs and cultures, she entered into the world of
children, animals and nature. But she continues painting, sometimes creating for herself and for her
interior world, which she fills with fantasy.
Today in her real world, the arts, the creation, she talks with Luis Felipe Marsans in an interview
(Diario Las Americas, July 1998):
To paint is a dream that is out of reality, and what it needs to be done is to look for a way that one
thing be compatible with another, to continue existing and painting, because time keeps moving on
and what we do today, will be the only thing that will stay from us tomorrow.
But it took plenty of time and hard work for Matty to arrive at this objective and realistic conclusion.
Here she also realizes that time does not flow without reason, and that when we learn we grow. Even
though the years of loneliness and having to live away from family she continues to give the very best
of herself. Matty Marcos loves life.
On March 1994, she created the murals of La Carreta Restaurant at the Miami International Airport .
These murals reveal her homesickness, the color of Cuba , the peasants, the fruits, the greenery of
her native country. It is a green concept that fills the spirit. Also during this time she paints murals in
pediatric offices and that is the way she lives today, back among us.
With new hope and desire to continue enhancing our lives with her art, she is presently working on
one of her most original creations: Her stones. These stones have a life of their own; they move, they
walk; they talk among themselves; they laugh and shine. The polished river stone is the one Matty
employs in her great small work. The acrylic is used to get a strong color, also in the drawing and pen
at the end. A unique, exclusive finish and extremely original.

A special note from the artist:

On each stone that I begin, I feel a new different emotion
Is the joy of a child,
Is the color of the sea,
Is the line that jumps to my eyes,
Is the everyday fantasy,
This is who I am…

Matty Marcos exhibited her collection of stones for the first time along with her paintings on canvas
at the Brickell Equity Corporation Limited Galleries in 1988. There she obtained numerous acclaims
through the radio, TV and printed media. After such a long absence, she happy and satisfied of the
public acceptance. Matty Marcos has returned to be among us, with her love to her paintings on
canvas and river stones. and her public.

I was there hidden for so long
that I did not know what was happening outside.
There, you only feel the sea, with the sound of the waves.
There, the seagulls disappear in the distance
And are painted in the air
There, a tear tastes to salt and algae and is clothed in sand.

I was there hidden for so long
That now I only want to go out… To see the sun…
Breathe the air full of lilies
And then, with color pencils,
Draw my name in the sand.
